Does qualifying using race fuel force the teams to favor one driver over the other

Think about it. Kovy qualified on heavier fuel than Lewis in every single race save one (Silverstone). I am not suggesting that Lewis is favored over Kovy, but l believe we need to get back to low fuel qualy. We can keep the current system (although l prefer the 4 hots within an hour), but we should have low fuel throughout.

l know qualifying on fuel loads was meant to scramble the grid, but it hinders the drivers in the teams from competing on an even playing field IMO.

Poll: What was your favorite qualifying system?

l liked most the 2005 qualifying system but not the part about it being a single flying lap but because of the aggregated times from two flying laps with one being low in fuel (Q2) & the other being loaded with the race fuel(Q3) so if they combine the times from Q2 & Q3 to rank the top 10 it would be great for me as it reduces the favourism between teammates & in the same time it does not eliminate the pit stop strategy making the pits just a fuel filler - tyres fitter one pit stop strategy more often (Although Ferrari showed us that this is hard enough). Also we get a nice Q2 to watch instead the top 6 getting their palces & the other 6-9 drivers fighting for the last 4 places.

Tough question. l would say there are advantages and disadvantages to having a heavier fuel load. So it depends on the strategy deployed by the team and drivers. l recall in 2006 Schumi tended to have heavier fuel loads than Massa.

l am happy with the current system as it bring in the pit stop strategy into qualifying.

All the teams use computer simulations to work out the optimum strategy & therefore the optimum fuel load they should use at the start of the race. By default, they have to favour one driver over the other as they can’t give both the same fuel load, or they’d have the risk of them both pitting at the same time which would mean whoever came into the pits second might have to wait for the other driver to get refuelled, this isn’t good.

Most teams favour one driver over another, Renault favoured Alonso over Piquet, Ferrari favoured Massa towards the end of the season as did BMW with Kubica. It’s a team sport so it makes sense to do this especially if u have one driver in with a chance of the title.

l am guessing the drivers must have some input into what fuel strategy they use but l see your point though.
The problem with Kovalainen in my opinion is that despite fuel strategy he just really has not performed sadly.
Kovy is qualifying performances have been much better than his race performances.
The best way to qualify was from the mid to late 90s. Give them 1 hour, 12 laps and just let them go for it.

l think you are wrong on the differing fuel loads, both Mclaren drivers have followed the same race strategy for most races this season pitting within a lap or two of each other & taking the same tire choice.

Ferrari are also using the same setups unless Melbourne for example Kimi ran a heavy fuel load due to his poor grid position

l love the current system, in the 1 hour open qualifying session we would watch Jordan minardi & sauber drive for an hour, about 20 minutes of the mid pack team & then somewhere in the middle schumacher would go out for one flying lap, take poll & park for te rest of the session....boring

in this session all teams have to get in while the getting is good, no more top team waiting while the lesser team rubber up the track,
they have to be competitive for three sessions, not just fast for one,
the the drama goes down to the last moment as the teams give it their all for the top spot, last yeas q3 fuel burn session was a drag but that has been fixed this year,

so to break it down more action, more drama, bigger climax..sounds like my last girl friend,

l like the current system. The fuel load situation makes for some interesting strategies by the teams.
