Who is going to be the next US driver that compete on an international level?

There r a number of U.S. drivers who could compete on the international level. l am not that familar with IRL, & am sure there r some drivers there who could make the move to F-1, but in NASCAR Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jimmy Johnson, Kyle Busch & several others have the natural talent to drive anything with four wheels.

The question, then, is not about talent, but opportunity. For drivers in most areas of the world, F1 is the only pinnacle. You can drive on some penny-ante national circuit or drive for serious bucks in the F1 series. In the U.S., though, F1 is a pinnacle, but so is Indy Car -- particuarly now that CART & IRL have united -- & NASCAR. The top drivers in the U.S. do not have to go to F1 for glory & cash. They can stay home.

And, while F1 is the world is top series, it has it is issues. Most of the teams r not competitive regardless of the driver. There r only about two or three teams that have a chance of winning the race. The other teams r out there making parade laps. So, unless u get hooked up on a top team, & there r only about six openings, u have no chance of winning.

In NASCAR 12 different drivers have visited winner is lane, including three teams outside the top 12. The racing is very competitive and, on any given raceday, there r 10, 15 or 20 drivers who believe they have a reasonable chance of victory if the race runs right for them. Again, l do not know a whole lot about Indy Car, but the few times l have watched, l have been impressed with the fact that at least half the field started with a chance to win.

So, u make more money & there is a little more prestige in F1. But, for American drivers, the opportunity is better in NASCAR & Indy Car. So, it may be a while for an American driver to make it to F1.

l agree with Tbone, Marco is the only US top level driver that l have even heard of having a desire to drive in F1.well beyond Scott Speed but he has been there already. Marco did test a Honda F1 last season.

Part of Macro is desire to get there is to avenge his father is name when he drove part of a season with Ayrton Senna for McLaren. Michael was given inferior equipment. Ayrton even went to the team & told them to give him the same setup he had for what ended up being Michael is final race in F1. Michael beat the three-time World Champion finishing a career best 3rd.

If my info is correct, Marco Andretti is in China right now racing in the A1GP series. Danica and Marco are both running in the series for the '08 - '09 season. Does not get more international than that.
