Lt. General Payback is right;he would be leading the points right now regardless.However,in all fairness,he would not have won the championship last year or the year before without the Chase.BUT there was a Chase & he did win those two championships.That is the format,every driver knew the deal before the seasons began(2004-present),and he is a 2-time champion;probably about to be 3.

Yes he would have been. Had the classic system been in place during the 2004 to 2008 seasons:
2004 - Jeff Gordon (5th Championship)
2005 - Tony Stewart (2nd Championship)
2006 - Jimmie Johnson (1st Championship)
2007 - Jeff Gordon (6th Championship)
2008 - right now he is the leader of course in the Chase format as well as in the Classic format.
So he would not have been a 2 time Champion but he would have been a Champion nevertheless.

l think he would be a champion with out the chase the reason he does not lead the points early in the season is cause it does not really matter to lead the points early. He only got to race two years prior to the chase so we never really found out if he could but l think he would have won.
