A joke question, how quaint! Nothing succeeds like success. If greatest is defined by wins, world championships, & other statistical measures then M. Schumacher was certainly the best. l rather enjoyed watching Johny herbert. he had some talent but in a humble, personable packaging, same goes for reubens barichello. l did not get enough of senna as l was starting to follow f1 when Imola occurred. the first race l got up early to tape & seriously watch was schumachers spanish race stuck in 5th gear, hooked after that

Anybody that says Michael Schumacher is a complete fool. Study after study, pundit after pundit have said he WOULDNT have won nearly as many championships without the huge advantage he had with his Ferrari. Yes he would have won a good few but would not have been able to dominate. Older drivers were the best, when it was the driver that won the race not the car. F1 is moving back towards that which is brilliant!

l will say Senna, but that is opinion. l say this as despite not always having the best car, he gave the good cars a run for their money!

Fangio. Nobody else has ever come close. Anybody saying Schumacher is forgetting that he had the best car and no competition.

As l just wrote elsewhere a few minutes ago:

Juan Manuel Fangio. Not only did he survive for 7 full seasons in F1 in an era where careers tended to be ended early by accidents, but he won titles in five of those years, in four different makes of car! He came back from breaking his neck in an accident early in 1952 to win four of those titles. Upon his retirement he held all of the ''most something'' records in F1. His records (for drivers competing in over 5 GPs, so as to exclude all of the Indy 500 results from 1950-60) for % of wins compared to starts, % of poles compared to starts, % of fastest laps compared to starts, % of GPs started on the front row of the grid & average qualifying position still stand today, 50 years after his retirement. Many of his records have only been surpassed in recent years, & all the drivers to have overtaken one of his records have taken part in 3x or more GPs than Fangio did. His great drives were many, but his all-time best was an amazing comeback from a minute behind at the Nürburgring in 1957 to win.his fastest lap being quicker than his pole position time.
He had real competition too: Ascari, Farina, Moss, Brooks, Collins, Hawthorn & Gonzalez, to name a few. Winning the title in an outdated Maserati in 1957 was a quite stunning achievement.

l would have to say Ayrton Senna.

When Micheal Schumacher started racing for Ferrari the only real competition he had was Mika Hakkinen, and When Mika retired, Schumacher didn’t really have any more competition until the mid 2000s.

Senna always had to give 100 percent to win because he raced alongside some of the greatest drivers ever. Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, and Nelson Piquet.

its in making..
watchout for Utkarsh Shetty (seriously)

no use of me saying Ayrton senna cause he wasnt as he lacked wat alain prost had..and alain lacked what ayrton had.so senna+prost an driver is being created whose name is 'Utkarsh Shetty' ....

seriously...but why so seriously.!!

Rosbif is right. It should also be pointed out that Fangio had a winning percentage of well over 40%. It is very doubtful that anybody will ever approach that.

l guess it is very difficult to say, but let is put that way.

Most successful driver ever: Michael Schumacher.
Fastest driver ever: Ayrton Senna.
Best strategist ever: Alain Prost.
Most dominant driver on his time: Fangio

If had to point only one l would say Michael Schumacher is the greatest.

Besides his many F1 records, Schumacher also holds the all time record for arrogance & antipathy. l hate that guy

Fangio.

He won several titles for different teams and was a complete gentlemen. Sure many drivers have beaten his records but please remember he only drove in 57 races.

The greatest is always changing with time and should be in slot of 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s,& 2000. You put in the period....Fangio, M Schumacher, Hamilton and soon will be Alonso (the lucky star).

Any driver who can get into an F1 car & wring its neck has my utmost respect.
Its anathema to say who is the greatest.
World Champions have a je ne sais quoi that singles them out from the hoi polloi.
Fangio had this in the 50's
Jim Clark in the 60's
Jackie Stewart in the 70's
Prost in the 80's
Senna in the 90 is
Schumacher in the 00's

In my eyes & whenever l see footage of them in their cars, showing me why l can not do their job, why l love this sport, for these men, l have the utmost respect. Some things can not be boiled down to one.

Well thats my opinion anyway.

Based on success Michael Schumacher but on being the greatest l would have to say Guy Edwards. Edwards gave up his race to save nicki lauder from a burning car and risked his own life while doing this.
Pink     Reply with quote
Statistically speaking, it can only be Micheal Schumacher.

For those who say he had a fast car under him, let is remember that before Schumacher went to Ferrari, they were full of politicking & in-fighting & have not won the championship since 1979. Alain Prost could not win the championship when he was with Ferrari.

For all his arrogance, Schumi managed to unite Ferrari & made them champions again. He was fast, he was technically sound, he was a leader & he brought Ferrari together as champions. That is why l would rank him above Senna & Fangio.
