NASCAR race cars: why not auto trans? Easier on the driver, more dependable, and less moving parts

Auto trans can not produce the same kind of acceleration.

You have more control over any vehicle with a manual transmission. An automatic transmission does not know when to downshift.

On top of the first two , there is also much more weight and parts to get moving in an automatic transmission and a LOT more things that can go wrong, leading to more mechanical issues.

l think something like the GM 4L60 or a 4L80 automatic would be great on a road course. They do make shift kits that converts an automatic transmission into a manual shift transmission. Transgo makes them. http://transgoperformance.com/gm4L60e.htm

l have one in my 1963 Chevy & installed it myself. They have spacers that u can place in the 1st & 2nd shift accumulator in the transmission that adjusts the firmness of a shift that could be set for a particular track. With the manual shift kit it will make the transmission shift down to 1st gear if u want it to while doing 100 miles per hour. l would not suggest that but was just using that as an example of how versatile it could be. Also a vacuum modulator can be installed inside the transmissions that can help smooth out the shifts to avoid spinning out in a curve. l love the action of a fully manual transmission but l love the way an automatic takes off like a slingshot.

The only problem l see with an automatic transmission is probably stripping the planetary gears out from the abuse or maybe the heat that those race cars put out under them would probably kill an automatic transmission before they could finish a race. I'd love to see that on a road course just to see what happened.

it not suppose to be easy its racing.they already got power steering what next cup holders . oh yeah they got them to.bottom line is the only time they shift is on the restart and all. there is the road ours es but that is not really nascar racing they should get rid of them road course anyway

There are WAY more parts to an automatic than in a standard.
